Three Questions

1) What was the Diver and the Dive Supervisor Burning Skills Training & Burning Safety Training?

2) What Venting procedures were used.

3) What type of machine, DC Generator or AC to DC Rectifier, what Type of rod and torch were being used?

Marc Begnaud died Burning using AC/DC Rectifier it was listed as a Welding Death.

The last time I know of a torch blowing up in a Divers hand. They were using an AC/DC Rectifier. It NEVER came up in the court case.

Read an "update" article on this and they mentioned a "possible explosion". How does THAT work? Im no expert on being blown up but I've been near a few explosions and I never once asked myself, hmm, was that an actual explosion or just a possible one?
Ethan there are a wh*** range of issues with Burning see' http://www.offshorediver.com/content/index.php?option=com_content&a...

There are only two basic reasons for an explosion while Burning underwater. Hydrogen that is created in the process builds up. Or you burn into a space containing explosive gases. In most cases this can be prevented by proper venting procedure.

If the build up in is inside the torch handles you have a different problem see attached PDF I made for my tenders when using the Broco 22 burning torch.. How to check it out before use.

Nice pdf JC! Thx
hey john,
I saw in the pfd that the welding cable was brazed on the end, and also that it looks like there is a wet splice with heat shrink over it. I was wondering if either of those are critical procedure?
Fresh out of the box
FWIW

I have used / do use heat shrink on splices all the time.

Use Marine Grade Heat Shrink - Why?

The Marine Grade has an adhesive lined heat activated glue in the inside to seal around the insulation / wire's.

I use the clear version.

Standard Product by 3M , Ancor Marine Product and others.
Excellent PDF file. I will read it, learn it, and share it with others.
Poor Vent is the # 1 problem often caused because no one trained the diver or the supervisor. Many times it is hear, you will learn as you go.

I am attaching the hand out from the Burning Class I wrote for OCEAN TECHNOLOGY INC.

John I think (and I'm sure others would concur) that it would be a timely idea if you would put your burning expertise into an e-book format and make it available online for all. I thnk that it would be an excellent way to raise money for Chris' family. Just a thought.
John I still have your video its one of the best $300 I have spent what 15 years ago or so now.
Nice pdf John. Thanks a lot.
No Problem we have to pass on what we can and watch each others back.
