I am getting ready to graduate dive school and am thinking about taking a DMT course. The question I have is "is it worth my time and money to take this course?" I heard that some companies that hire DMTs cut down their dives because they need them topside as a DMT.

If you are a new fresh out of school brand new diver I'd say don't bother. It will be hard enough for you to get any job regardless of what tickets you have. That ticket has an expiry date on it so wait until you get some work and autographs in the logbook before you start spending even more money.

Good luck.
Having a DMT cert will get you a few more opportunities. Most companies will pay you a little more for having it. But, straight out of school means you don't know jack. Get a job, and figure out if this is really what you want to do before you spend more money. Remember you'll have to be a deck ape for good while.
Chris,
I hear the4 GOM is slow this season, your DMT will set you apart. This season it can make the difference between hiring on to a company, or not working at all. Only do it because you want to work in this industry, I always perfer hiring a diver who has invested in himself and not looking for me to train him. If you aren't sure if you will stick in the industry save you money - but education and additional skills will always help. Good luck mate!
