Thanks for the pic.
Nice boat, looks kinda familiar. ;)
Where did you get the pic? I haven't seen her since she went to dry dock. Great collection of old pics and hats,Bill. Keep en coming!
Your photos are outstanding. The MK V's take me back to the seventies. Doug Stirn took me to meet Matt Matthews, whose
hats were laid out just like your photo. We left with Doug's station wagon stuffed to the gills with my new MK V treasures. Matt just kept putting bits in the pile, and I was more than happy to take them away.
That was Matts' basement & my selection was the nearest helmet & full jake with complete spares, radios, 2 hose shots, etc. the one at the very back was Matts' "keeper" brand new desco Mk V. bill
Just noticed you are from BC... I love BC! Worked up there 2 summers on the peace reach of lake Williston back when I was young and limber. (you an Ian Tyson fan?) That's where I first got to ride in choppers and float planes. Worked for an outfitter situated at the mouth of the Otter Tail... cutting trail, building cabins, fishing, hunting and such. We would catch these dolly varden trout, stuff em with fresh sliced morel mushrooms, wrap in foil and cook. M-M-good! I want to go back some day and check the place out. Heaven on earth!
I never worked as a diver but was scuba certfied (before they invented C-Cards) in 1963 in Milwaukee when I was in college. Wjem I moved to New Jersey for work in 1971, I got a real C-Card at Lakeland Scuba in East Hanover. The general manager had hardhat training at Florida Institute and had a kirby gas hat in there one day. "Think anybody would enroll in a hardhat calss?" he asked. He got three volunteers n the spot. Two weeks later he showed up with a full MkV rig, and we were rolling. We conducted cla**** with MkV and then Tupperware for the next 4 yearas. When Dave left the dive shop, three of us kept the gru going by acquiring gear and the topside gear. In 1993 we turned our group into the Northeast Diving Equipment Group of the Historical Diving Society. We've been doing Memorial Day and Labor Day rallies every year since. See www.hardhatdivers.org. We have number of Commercial Dive Company owners and C-divers in the group to keep us safe and honest.
Bill
I've finished the 2nd one and am half way throught the 3rd. So I'm not sitting on my ass. Well ... I am sitting on my arse, writing. Anyway you get my drift. Watch this space....

WOW! Just watched a presentation featuring the Martin Mars on U-tube... those things are amazing and now on my must see before I die list. Unreal, I had no idea any even still existed... wonder what they would charge for one ride :') Thanks and have a good weekend,G
Notice small bailout bottle that snapped to harness on my right side(never had to use it). We worked air to 225' on Jet Barge 2 and I figured it would get me up.
You have nice set of pictures. Will have to dig out some oldies to post.
Hey Bill .. thanks for the reply .. im not fussy when it comes to work as long as the cheque is on time and more importantly the company has a good safety record. I'm not in this to work for unsafe companies which will result in a comrade getting injured because they are around.
So if know of some things out east here in the maritimes or some companies even to maybe stay away from it would be great knowledge to know.
thanks
Hi Bill,
I have been away.
My Professional Medical work is based in Southampton UK.
My Professional Diving work has been international fro the Far East , Middle east, Mediterranean to Orkney.
I did dive in Canada in 2003 in the lakes.
It's obviously great to dive in warm clear water 60m vis and just a 3mm suit to keep off the stingers. I'll dive in a puddle, so I dive anywhere anytime and I've taken ropes off props in the Hamble River to Stromness and undertaken major international projects.
You have a very impressive gallery of helmet pics
A very Happy Christmas and New Year.
Hey Bill, Dale here, you have a pretty good collection of helmet photos. I also noticed you drove an oil field rig up truck. I use to build those. from the frame to the tail roll.
Are you talking about the corruption scandal or work? As far as the scandal goes, 1456 claims everything is legit within our local. As for work, not much to be had! Everyone is protecting their own. Couple bigger jobs to start soon, which include FDR Drive (likely going to turn into an emergency job due to the quickly deteriorating conditions), TREVCON is gearing up for a return to the Passenger Ship Terminal, and WEEKS should be starting to lay Submar mats over all the tunnels in the spring.
Back offshore?! I've never been home yet!!
Anyways, Happy New Year to you too.
I was minding my own business at the end of November, when I got a call to come back to the Ship for 'a couple of weeks work' while these guys attempt to make something that looks like a weld on the platform. Fast-forward 6 weeks, and 3 weeks in the bin (most of which was handing the welders their welding rods for 8 hours, then finding all their defects!)and we might get home next week sometime! This 2 week job certainly made a lot of guys a lot of money, with the exception of the client, and the welding company!
I'd love to get some pics of their 'habitat' to show you- a 'daring' example of new technology (condoms and all!)
Yes, there I can only agree with you. It is right if one remains for longer time in one and the same place and a good stability needs is the old heavy helmet diver equipment of the advantage. One can protect himself very well from the cold is also right what you say. There I find the modern systems like Kirby Morgan for the diving in cold bodies of water just in the area of the neck a weak spot has, here if one protects himself not properly, the suit presses by the hydraulic pressure the skin and thus it comes to quick cooling down of the diver.
I'm surviving Bill. Its been a very long winter so far and still waiting for the sun to start shining work wise. But hey, it looks like were back to normal. Take care of yourself.
Hey Bill, I added a couple of new pics for you. You have some nice hat pics. The Aquadine Band Mask, Sat Hat, I saw you KMB Band mask - noted the Taylor Diving tape measure. Good Siebe and Kirbby Gas hat. I especially liked the pics from the North Sea, brought back a cold feeling in my bones. I have an affinity for old diving gear and diving history as well.
Hei Bill. In my class we started with about 43 but only a third of that graduated. Been working the inshore scene for 14yrs. applying my construction background to projects. Trying to get offshore, spice up the resume. Yourself ?
Hey Bill,
I'm long retired from the game now Bill, though I haunt this & several other commercial boards to keep up with what's going on out there & to perhaps reconnect with some old mates. I don't know, but maybe one day I'll come back to the deepsea for one more go around - there's no life like it!!
I moved here to victoria about 3yrs ago... came for a two week job then ended up staying ..lol.
Had myself transferred from the carpenters local out east to 2404 ... got some gigs from them..but i think i came on like gang-busters, and pissed off a couple of ppl. And you know, in our small world that could be detrimental. So I'm just trying to get into ppls good books, play nice, dont let my ego get me banished again and let them treat me like a newbie. But it's hard when u got a scuba instructor for a supervisor whose background is accounting ...hahaha. Oh well.
So the offshore is crappy ?
Is there no place that is hiring ?
I just want to get my feet wet offshore atleast once to say i tried.
I know its a never ending question ...but can u recommend any companies ?
A few guys have said that just flying to Singapore ,shacking up in the Commercial Hotel and hitting up every dive company on the strip would get me work. Any truth to that ?
Good Day Bill,
I believe there were 31 of us starting and 28 who graduated. I loved working Offshore in the GOM. I really miss it. After the recession hit the US really bad there was not to much diving work for Canadians do to Hurricane Katrina work being pretty much all cleaned up. After that I moved back to Inland diving in good old cold Canada. As far as where I'd like to work offshore is always my goal. I was trying to get over to India, I even have obtained a 15 year Visa. In all honesty location really does not matter I'll go anywhere the work is.
