Ben, forget all that volunteer crap. The world is in a recession, especially the oil patch, except for Australia. The west is boomong with the Gorgon Project. Get yourself to the west coast-get in the Maritime Union Of Australia, or barring that get on to one of the contractors involved in the expansion projects, they are mentioned in Offshore magazine, Maritime Reporter, and other trade magazines-online, look thru the archives over the last year. Hire on as a 'gopher' or a parts man, or clean up hand, yard security - anything that will give you access to the info loop for any of the offshore projects-best would be on a crane barge. Oz is a closed shop-no ex-pats or foreigners. Theres your dive school money and learn about offshore oilfield constuction at the same time so you have something to bring to the table after dive school-working knowledge of offshre.
