Stripped of its internal fittings after returning to Panama City, Sealab was left to rot before eventually being dumped in the sea. Then, almost 20 years after its historical mission, it was salvaged, scrubbed down and given to the Museum of the Man in the Sea, in Panama City, FL. Sealab sits by the roadside in the museum parking lot, a skeleton in red marine paint ignored by the passing stream of motorists.

Were you to climb inside today, you would find a warren filled with wiring tubes, metal brackets where equipment was mounted and steel fold-down bunks.

The museum is now looking to raise funds to restore the underwater habitat to its original state.
