This is one of the two PTCs (personnel transfer capsule) from the Elk River (IX-501) that were used on the Sealab III Project off San Clemente Island, CA They were free-hanging pressurized elevators that were hoisted up and down by a crane on the Elk River. Each PTC could carry 4 aquanauts between the Elk River and Sealab III. The hatch located underneath mated to Sealab's top-side hatch and also to the DDC's, located on the Elk River, allowing the aquanauts to ransfer into the DDC under pressure. Decompression time was about 150 hours.
