im very intrested in getting into this feild, and i got word from a buddy working that there was a good school in longbeach, ca but the number keeps changing and seems kinda "fake" so i looked on the internet at a bunch of schools and it looks like d.i.t. might be my best choice. is this smart? should i even bother with school? im a lil skeptical because i went to a tech school years ago for achitectual engineering that got me nowhere. any advise would help out tremedously. thank you

Go to DIT bro you will learn more. College of overspending in Wilmington-not LongBeach is ok I went there in 1999-2000 . But you will learn more at DIT as a tender , if you choose to work offshore good luck ! And depending on what company and YOU it will be awhile before you break out and dive bro "in the gulf". Stay safe.
thanx my first stright answer. thanks
I agree with Flynn. Get a job on a commercial dive boat as a deck hand and see what it's all about. Make some money and then go to school. Don't borrow cash and waste time mulling though dive school just to find out you can't cut it. DIT is a good school, their guy's seem to be well suited for the offshore world. TOC is a party and close the the industry. Young Memorial is cheap and you'll get what you need to get started. The Santa Barbara school is good too, but two years is a bit much. If Geoff Thilst is there, get on his good side, he has a wealth of knowledge.
thanks guys so much help from this forum feeling alot more confident. any ideas on how to get on a boat as a deck hand?
Sneak onboard while they are sleeping and hide out for 2 days. Then just walk into the captains cabin and ask him what he wants you to do.

just kidding.

Research the diving companies in Louisiana and tell them what you want to do. They will let you know what you need to work as deckhand.
Word of advice: Cut that fro and try to dress like a well behaved citizen. Get a TWIC card first. If you cannot qualify for that then forget working offshore.
also lots of help thanks! but i have no idea on how to get on a boat as a deck hand
Most of the big dive companies have a marine division. Look into Global Industries, CalDive, Epic/Tetra, Tiburon, Triton, Bisso/T&T, Oceaneering, Chet Morrison. There are also some third party dive boats, most lift boat companies will get hired by a diving company, try Ryan Marine, Crossmar, Candies, there's a lot more out there but don't come to mind. Marty is right, get your TWIC card first, google Transportation Workers Identification Credential for more info. And yep, your gonna have to wear a hard hat, so a trip to the barber would be a good idea.

Hey Marty, how's it going? You been working? Tommy called the other day, he's back home now. Cheers!
oh yeah ill definatly cut the hair before school. just trying to enjoy my last few weeks with it. lol thanks for all the advise!
Nah dude check out Louisiana technical college young memorial campus. everyone will call you smart after you graduate and you do not have to ten times the amount that you would pay at other schools.
smart
save money, go to morgan city, la. you'll save thousands and still get the basics. all you need is the basics and the rest on on the job. i got my neighbor to go there and less than 6 months later he was offshore with my company.
