Does anyone know if its possible to get any where in diving on merrit alone or do you just need thousands of pounds to throw at getting tickets. Because the ones lacking in skill but with all the money on my course are now living the life offshore and Im still stuck in civils with no money to progress. Should I just give up?

I think they both have their pros and cons.

Obviously having all the money to spend on getting tickets means the CV will look top notch but the problem with that is that you won't have the experience to back it up with.  But because you have spent all the money and have a basic understanding of whatever extra tickets you have then you will surely have the advantage over someone who is good at working civils.

Thats the way I see it but I'm a baby diver still trying to get my first job so feel free to correct me on anything.

I know some excellent divers who work in UK civils without any tickets other than the basic diving certs and some divers who have been offshore after spending thousands on tickets and I wouldn't let them clean out my fish tank.

Get some experience inshore and make some money, offshore is quiet now but it will always be there so no need to rush. At the end of the day you need the tickets to get out there and you will be investing in yourself.

Stick with it as long you can keep paying the bills.

Cheers brother been in the game for about three years now and things never seem to get any better you no. But to be honest its probably just the jan Feb draught thats getting me down. Cheers for the advice though champ.

Peace

Diving on merrit is the way to go why make some one money for doing nothing, when you need the money.Stick in there it is time on the job and if you have down and out vibe about your self the people doing the hiring will see it and not hire you. I would find out information on all the dive companies around you and just bug the s*** out of them in there face kind, that will show them you really want a job. Ask them if they have shop help and that you would even start there. I tell companies who say oh do you have all your CV's up to date, Why any one can pay money for CV these day's that still dose not make you a good diver
