Class starts July 6th with orientation on June 29th. I was just trying to get a general idea of morgan city from the dive community and advice on the gear i should bring with me. How hard it is to find lodging around that area.  Also if i should apply for my twic card now. Is there any work for students at any of the shops around town? If there is anyone on this site that is going to be attending the july 6th class i am looking for room mates. Any input would be greatly appreciated

Justin, things are likely to be a bit crazy in Motown due to the flooding (spillway opening) in the region.  Many people have been displaced from surrounding communities (Morgan City itself is largely protected by floodwalls and levees), and available space may be at a premium.

You may want to go down there early and inquire with diving companies for work in the shop; tell them your situation (that you are a school tender starting in July.)  Be prepared to fill out an application, references, pre-employment physical etc.  Some companies also have bunk-houses onsite which may be an option at least for a few nights, depending on how "desperate" you are (either because of housing supply or financially or whatever.)

This will also give you the "general idea of Morgan City", as you put it (maybe not the most exciting place, but I can say that South Louisiana is one of the most unique places in the United States.)

As far as gear goes, you are best to ask the school (I am class of 1997, so my advice would be outdated.)  In any case, go light as you will have plenty of opportunity to buy gear once you are there-- either new or secondhand from other divers.

Yes, go ahead and apply for the TWIC-- you will eventually need it (offshore and inshore) and it's not diving industry specific; I've met electricians who work in the Port, for example, that need them.

Good luck and Dive Safe.

That's some good advice Dave!  There use to be a place called "Betty's Boarding House".  If still there, she use to take in tenders.  The Plantation Motel is cheap and lots of OII hands crash there, go to the bar and ask around.  The Rathskeller or "the rat" is a good place to go to find other sorts like yourself.  Buy gear at Life Saving Equipment.

Watch your ass and don't trust anyone.  Lots of drugs and desperate low lifes there.

sounds like my kinda town...

Thanks Dave, sounds like solid advice. It hit me after you said that living space might be at a premium about the flooding down there. I've been looking into areas 30 miles from Morgan city and have found a number of apartments. Morgan city might not be to exciting but neither is somd, does not bother me one bit love it here, and im hoping to make la my new home. And PAISTE; My uncle also went to school down there and tended for a few years till his ass got introuble. He filled me in on the kinda trouble thats down there. Gonna try to avoid that at all costs.     Anything else anyone would like to add? Thanks for the advice everyone, much appreciated!

Thanks David, finishing up my physical this week with the stress test and xrays. What is some of the work consist of working in the shop? Would I need my twic card to work there?
