Engineer Divers

I am a civil engineer (PE) currently between jobs and seriously considering getting my commercial dive license. I've heard conflicting stories that (1) I can choose my salary and location with a magic wave of the card, and/or (2) I'll need to put in my time as a tender before I can wear my engineer hat underwater, and/or (3) I will have as much diving work as I can handle, and/or (4) My dive gear will never get wet after I leave school.

Can anyone comment on the market for civil engineer/divers?

It is true that there are good paying jobs for diver/engineers. I see the job postings pretty much continuously for them (see the job board under Position: Engineering), whereas being a run-of-the-mill commercial diver without the PE makes it much harder to break into that line of work.

Call the guys at Castle Engineering in NJ. They are good people and know what they are doing. They might be able to give you some advice or direction as to what they know about that combo of skills/education. Bill Castle is on the Board of ADCI.

As You already a PE, it is easier to teach and Engineer to dive than to teach a "diver" to be an engineer.
