Divers and their support personnel can have a union, and negotiate for the pay and benefits that they want and find suitable for this unique industry. Contractors aren't the enemy, they just take advantage of the surplus supply of divers and support crew, it would be hard not too.

But if they had to negotiate with a group of top personnel and signed an agreement stating that they would only hire said personnel than consequently they would do what ever they had to, to keep production up and running. The problem of excess personnel is cured with an apprenticeship school where you provide the training that is determined by both parties to be sufficient, and from there forward you control how many people enter the business, not Dive schools, and that answers the problem of excess labor supply.

We all know there will be no standards in this industry as long as there is a steady supply of people brought in to displace anyone who wants to improve their lot in this business!!!!

Ill say it again, step one analyze and quantify the market, how much work is there? Step two, identify the key personnel that cant be replaced with some kid fresh out of scab camp, who can only say "Get er done" Step three, create a lucrative pay and benfit system that suits the nature of the industry, the people who work in it, and the contractors to an extent. Step Four, pitch the idea to the Key personnel, keep no records of who you contact, so no one can be black balled and then file for an election when you have enough votes.

Now is the time because many people who would other wise be unwilling to even consider creating a "union" now have nothing to lose in trying, fore what can you lose if you are denied the opportunity to work for pennies with no retirement nor good health if you stay in the rodeo long enough.

This obviously is a lot harder than it sounds, but it can be done if you come up with a plan that the "key Personnel" think is achievable.

Now if anyone would like to contact me here or anywhere else you can send me an e-mail, or send me a message, if its possible, and I will post a picture up shortly, over
Myself and several others have already guaranteed being blackballed by using our real names and photos, however Real Men do not hide in shadows they face the problem and issues in the light. Most arent that brave. SO speak away we will listen and give feedback maybe some of these guys will grow balls and stand up instead of just speaking out. and keeping their head down accepting the chicken scratch that is way below their skill. There is no better trade where in which one could collectively join together with their peers and negotiate with contractors to earn better wages, than the commercial diving industry. Experience and skill are commodities to be earned by Divers, and its not something that can be "bought" somewhere else, there is no Walmart for these kind of high end skills. But the people who populate the Diving industry all too often do what you gentlemen have herein previously described, in short, undermine anyone's effort to better this industry.
The time is ripe for change, the key is that industry leaders, the people who make things happen, have to step up and say no more, this is what we want or else were out. In order to accomplish this feat, one has to get an accurate handle on the amount of work available in the near future, then make a list of crucial positions with in this industry, and get more than 50% of those individuals on board. Then you can get started. Now when it comes to compensation or business structure one should not limit them selves to just notions of wages and benefits.
If anyone has any more questions on this subject I will be more than happy to answer them, where there is a will, there's a way. It will be interesting to see…tag:community.cdiver.net,2010-09-25:2371245:Comment:856612010-09-25T02:03:25.150ZDive Divahttp://community.cdiver.net/profile/DiveDiva
It will be interesting to see what happens with the "Idle Iron" mandates. Letters went out to all the affected GOM Leasees on Sept 15. The requirements under 30 CFR 250, subpart Q have been clarified for the Leasees regarding abandoned wells and platforms. The requirements go into effect Oct 15, 2010. The Leasees have 120 days to submit their plans for the removal of these abandoned wells and structures. While the feds state they will be monitoring the removals closely.
I wouldn't be surprised to see contractors attempting to sign up divers at low wages between now and Feb. in the event that the demand for divers to dismantle these "Idle Iron" wells and platforms, drives diver wages up next spring. The whores in Pearl were getting $3.00 a trick with 50% going to the house.
Has not changed much since 1942.
The problem from the start of time with divers is that they will not stick together.
The attitude is f**K everyone but you and me and F**K you when your gone.
50 years ago when I started divers were not called by there first name it was Mr. and we were treated as professionals and paid as such. that went down the tube with SCUBA and tupperware helmets.
The Carpenters International tried to organize the Gulf divers in the 70s and they could not get the divers to vote union. Nothing has changed nor will it.Wages will drop as demand drops.
Great demand and wages go up. thats how it works. In 1980 I was making $3000.00 per dive on a 12 week job thats what I demanded and got. Nine other divers on the job passed up the dives and got zip. Standup and ask for what you are worth or complain because they are paying what they think you are worth. Roger that

What you're describing Jerry, is a trade association. That's what ADC, IMCA and DEMA all profess to be. The OGP recognize them as trade associations and do business with then as such. The divers could certainly form their own professional trade association.

$1.00 lifetime membership.... like those "Private Bar Passes" that keep out unwanted company. THats the Idea Not to Take Over the ADC, but to walk away from it and let it die. Real Buisness Owners dont need the extra expence and most dont know anything about this business other than we will buy from them if the price is right nomatter which company we work for. THey pay dues (Look at the fees online) and have a vote, but we divers go through their courses, and our MEMBERSHIP should we choose to join carries no vote, no use of the logo, or anymention of the ADC on business cards references or referral sheets to prove we have a binding association. THat right there tells me we are the meat that feed the dragon. If we contact and contract with the Oil companies as an organized group, we can keep ADC boats in business by offering them a fair rent, or hire a guy whos family really needs the money.
Think about it callit a deep sea diver association, divers group what ever Union means unity (thats the definition) what ever word you use, divers just need to stand up stand out but stand together and refuse to die for peanuts. Most old school divers hate the U word too, but bottom line stand up or accept the pay that staying quiet has left you with. Insurance is easy to get, bonding and equipment.
Honor, Pride, and self respect are all earned.....
