Crazy things to dive in...
Most every diver works underwater, but recently someone posted a question about diving into a diesel gasoline tank.
That made me think...what else have you dove in that is odd/weird/different? Tell us about it and any details that made it unique.

At the California State Railroad Museum RAILFAIR in 1989, I watched a guy dive into the water cistern of the tender of a live steam locomotive. The tender is comprised of two compartments, a rectangular fuel oil tank and a larger cylindrical water cistern. Something had plugged the screen trap over the water pipe from the tender to the locomotive's water pump and injectors. He donned scuba gear and made his way from the water filling hatch on top, down through the numerous slosh baffles to the outlet at the bottom front of the tank. The mission was a success, but the diver darned near froze his butt off, since he went in with just jeans and a T-shirt and scuba gear into water that was about 50 degrees! They didn't have time to go get a wetsuit, because the live locomotive was running low on water. The engine was Southern Pacific 4-6-2 2472 from the Golden ate Museum in San Francisco.

How about a full 40 ft sewage digester tank to weld a cracked tank plate.
or 30 feet of Iron Oxide Mud tank to clear the bottom discharge valve that was blocked with a dropped chain.
Or cutting a body out of a blocked sewer pipe with a 10,000 psi water blaster, removed him bit by bit.
Diving in gasoline in a Chevron Tanker fuel tank to clear a valve.
What we do for money and the glory.

How about installing ventilation tubes, mixers and propellers in a waste digester tank of a pig abattoire. The hardest part was the time outside the suit. Thank God for Aquadyne.

Yep, I used to work in Phoenix, Az for a no name mom-&-pop,(won't mention the co. name) every damn day in raw sewage. The 'dive team' consisted of about 4 of us new guys fresh outta school who didn't know better and didn't want to go offshore just yet. Yeah, it was some messy shit, it took me weeks to start getting used to the smell of it all. Imagine anything you can think of that'll fit into a man hole, mixed with condoms, butt-plugs, anal rings, bike and car tires, toys, trikes, road cones, garden hose, litteraly tons upon tons of tampons, and the occasional plastic ziploc drug bag (you know; the tiny ones). We'd get there around 10 at night and open the hatches at the treatment plant and the smell was bad enough before we got there, but once you opened the hatch you could hear the torrent of piss and shit ripping just below your feet. Well, one of us would dress out in a desco/hunter drysuit and jump in with a 6 inch trash pump and start sucking. Once off the ladder and under 'water' it was about 6 feet down to the shit pile. Usually the shit pilled up into a rock box about 7' by 7' 8 or 9' feet. It filled up everyday, and we had 6 of em to clean. Shit was a bitch back then, just starting out; I'd just about quit diving before I'd even started. That was 4 years ago and lifetime away compared to where I am nowadays. I've been surface diving offshore and even had time in SAT. Kick ass man! Gotta start somewhere right?

My crysiest was 2 weeks ago. Diving 6 km into a tunnel. Diving behind the cutterhead and infront of the crusher on a TBM. tight as fuck. 28 cm between the crusher plates. And a intake 1m behind me sucking 20 m3 water/hour Scary scary

Replaced a suction strainer in pure unadulterated raw sewage. Better than tending on that job. At least I didn't have to stand there smelling that sh^t.

Yea I too have dive jobs in raw sewage but the best job I had was replacing new gates in the Shamu Stadium at Sea World. What was spooky was while I was doing the underwater welding on the gates every time I would look to my left I would be looking at 3 killer whales that were watching me welding thru metal bars. That made me kinda nervous.

Great salt lake was pretty weird. Lotta weight needed and it turned all of the metal on my dive gear black. That's some dense shit. Pretty odd doing a deco stop at 5'...
